Army shooting live pigs as a drill

July 20th, 2008 by Leslie

Unbelieveable!  The Associated Press reported on Thursday that the Army's 25th Infantry Division is shooting live pigs at Schofield and calling it a “drill” that will save lives by teaching medical personnel to treat trauma injuries in a warzone.

Here’s a link to the AP story:

I am really troubled by this cruelty. The actions of the Army were brought to light by a soldier who notified People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Thank goodness this soldier had the courage to do this.

PETA is an animal-rights extremist group that itself is controversial. The group has been known to throw red paint on models wearing fur coats and members also have threatened people involved in research on animals. But PETA does get our attention about the plight of defenseless animals. Some of its celebrities who speak up for animals are Charlize Theron, Alicia Silverstone and Sir Paul McCartney. PETA is asking its members to inundate the Army with calls and e-mails. You can help by adding your name to PETA's list of people who do not agree with what the Army is doing and tell others to do the same. Why can't the Army think of other ways to train its medical personnel?

If I were these soldiers, I'd refuse to inflict pain on animals in any situation.

Yikes... Please don't shoot the pigs. That's just CRUEL. There's got to be another way that's much better than this.

Owwweeee - Scary PETA - The scary party is the military who inflicts unspeakable terror, pain and agonizing death on animals for their disgusting experiments. Maiming, exploding, exposing animals to deathly chemicals - then watching their gruesome handiwork! How vile, and totally legal. Legalized animal cruelty - U.S.A. should be so proud....Unforgivable!!!!!

Are these feral pigs? If so, I think the state already has a program to eradicate feral pigs by hunting to control the damage they do with indigenous plants and the environment. Perhaps the Army was working in collaboration with the state since they are already targeted for eradication...I dunno, just speculating. However, you don't want the animals to suffer needlessly through the process.

    How horrible!
My letter to the ARMY is signed, sealed, delivered.

I certainly hope the army was also given the information that at Peta's animal shelter in Virginia, Peta killed over 90% of the animals it took in during 2007. Peta killed 1815 animals in 2007. This information was obtained using Virginia's public records law.

I don't understand Peta objecting to killing by the army when they kill so many themselves.
