Tammy Kubo is the Hawaii Pet Nanny.

Ever wonder what to do when you have to go on a trip and need someone to care for your pets? It's a real dilemma. The guilt felt by pet parents is huge!

A viable alternative to leaving your pet at a kennel or going home in the middle of the workday to take your dog out for a bathroom break, is to call the Hawaii Pet Nanny.

Owner and professional petsitter, Tammy Kubo, opened the Hawaii Pet Nanny in 2005. She and her staff of nannies (twenty in all) will care for your pets in your own home. The length of visits ranges from 45 minutes to 12 hours for overnight stays.

"We have a mix of clients.... a large group we see Monday through Friday for a mid-day dogwalk and others call us only for vacation use," said Kubo. Many of her clients contact her ahead of time, sometimes up to a year in advance, because appointments fill up quickly, especially during the holidays.

Cat owner, Robert McConnell said, "I've used Tammy for past two years. She is just the most wonderful trustworthy professional pet sitter and it's not just her, her staff too. Riley, my cat, really enjoys the nannies. Before when I'd go away, I'd come home and Riley would be moody. Since I've used the Pet Nanny, he's real positive and very happy. And long as he's happy, I'm happy."

Kubo also does housesitting: taking in mail, drawing and closing curtains so someone looks at home as well as watering plants. McConnell said, "I never worry about the personal items in my home when I'm away. I have never had a problem [with their services]. When I had a last-minute family emergency and had to get on a plane right away, I made a quick phone call and didn't have to worry about Riley or my home."

Kubo has been a pet lover all her life taking care of everything from a chinchillla to a turtle. Animals sense how much she cares about them and respond to her gentle demeanor. As a pet nanny, she finds each day different and rewarding.

Good to know. I go tell my aunty and uncle because last time I was Cody's sitter. I tried to be nice and take him for a walk, but I think I got walked instead.

Having your pet stay in their own home while you are away is the best thing for both you and your pet. There is one thing you will have to worry about. You have to trust the right people to stay in your home while you are away. Hawaii Pet Nanny looks like a trustworthy and experienced group who can handle this. Check them out if you feel a little unsure.

hi kelli: you're a very reliable person. i'm sure they could enjoy their trip because you can be trusted. it's extremely hard to find good sitters.

erin: animals do get stressed out when they are not in their own environment. it is the best thing when they can stay home.

keahi: in exchange, do you watch their pets when they're away?

    this is a funny story.

i used to petsit a dog named tiny. he was part schipperke. tiny would come over to our house whenever his owners were away and they were away often since they were in the travel business.

one day, i came home at lunch to let tiny out to do his 'business' and he slipped under the fence and ran across the street to the other graveyard. i had to go to the 2nd floor of our house to look out in the lanai to find him. tiny was a little black speck running as fast as he could among the gravestones.

i had to drive my car across the street to get him since he ran so far away.

i nearly had a heart attack. if something had happened to him, i would have felt so guilty. (i can laugh about it now, but i was terrified when that happened.)

I have family that loves pets so that makes it easy for us. Smart idea for a business.

  6. M:

That's one ot the biggest thing people don't think about before getting a cat or dog. What happens to the pets when you go on vacation. We have a cat and dog and we live with my parents or my parents live with me? Which ever it is, my parents takes care of our pets when we go on our vacations so it's easy for us since my parents are not strangers to our pets or is that our pets are not strangers to my parents?

I use Jana at Akamai Pet Services. She is fantastic.

Thanks Leslie! Another option to consider since not many places would be too happy with the poodles.

  10. Ian White:

You can post a free pet sitter required at at http://www.pet-sitters.biz This is a world wide matching service and pet sitters will then forward responses to your requirement.

    hi homey:

there have been some very nasty posters lately targeting some of the bloggers.

so with the exception for stephen's blog, because he has a million comments every day, all of us have to review the comments before they can be posted.
